Emesent underscores mining innovation as a growth priority with new appointment

Emesent has expanded its board by welcoming seasoned mining executive Christofer Catania. This reflects its commitment to strengthening ties with the mining industry, which has been a cornerstone of the growth strategy for the developer of the autonomous SLAM-based mobile surveying solution Hovermap. Mining sites have historically driven the rapid adoption of Hovermap for surveying inaccessible and GNSS-denied environments. With this strategic appointment, Emesent aims to further solidify its position within the sector.
Geospatial data is the backbone of the mining industry. Advancements in the geomatics sector are unlocking unprecedented opportunities that promise to significantly benefit not only mining surveyors individually, but also the broader mining industry. Emesent has been at the forefront of innovation, introducing autonomous drones for underground stope mapping. This technology has redefined mapping workflows, improving safety and efficiency across some of the world’s largest mining operations. The Australian-based company is now exploring new opportunities to expand and enhance its mining solutions.
Industry-centric experience
In the early stages as a technology startup, the focus was on equipping Emesent with expertise to build the business from the ground up. This included guiding the leadership team through investment challenges, managing rapid growth and ensuring sound corporate governance, according to Emesent board chairman Mike Zimmerman. “As Emesent matures, however, it is crucial to inject specialist customer and industry-centric experience into the mix, and I’m confident our recent appointment of Christofer Catania will do just that,” Zimmerman stated, emphasizing the importance of bringing an industry specialist onto the board as part of the company’s strategic expansion.
Reflecting on the contributions of the existing board, Emesent CEO Charles Miller noted their instrumental role in shaping the company into its current form. He expressed enthusiasm for the addition of Christofer Catania, highlighting the value of his global industry perspective. “Christofer will help provide an even deeper understanding of our clients’ needs and offers a strategic view on the global and technological trends that impact them the most,” Miller said.
Capturing reality in challenging environments
A pioneer in autonomous SLAM-based mapping, Emesent offers advanced solutions for efficient data capture, processing and visualization across industries such as mining, public safety, oil and gas, construction and engineering. At its core is Hovermap, a transformative tool that empowers organizations to safely and efficiently collect 3D Lidar data, tackling challenges in areas where GNSS signals are unavailable.
It has been six years since co-founders Dr Stefan Hrabar and Dr Farid Kendoul commercialized their research at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). In that time, Emesent has seen increasing traction of its mobile 3D data capture, processing and visualization solutions in new markets across Asia, Europe and the Americas. Outside of mining, use cases for Emesent’s technology have extended into a variety of sectors such as construction, engineering, forestry and public safety.
Ensuring continuity and safety of site operations
Resource businesses – especially those in the underground mining sector – have long understood the value that data generated by Emesent’s Hovermap provides in ensuring continuity and safety of site operations. Emesent’s ability to deliver accurate and actionable data in extremely challenging, GPS-denied surroundings has transformed the way teams understand their working environments, enabling them to quickly address common operational hazards. Meanwhile, they gain access to better quality data for project planning and future risk mitigation.
“I’m excited by the prospect of bringing my expertise to the board of Emesent and would like to thank everyone involved in the selection process,” said Christofer Catania. “Emesent is already doing so many things right. I hope my contribution will help the business deliver on its ambitious targets – not just in mining, in other sectors as well.”
