November 8, 2024
Tom Rutkowski, PE, has been named mining region director for the U.S. Earth and Environment business at WSP, a leading engineering, environment and professional services firm, to foster the environmentally responsible growth and expansion of U.S. mining.
Rutkowski is a senior vice president, environmental engineer and subject matter expert in treatment of mine impacted water and industrial wastewater. With more than 20 years of experience with the firm, he most recently led the mine process and infrastructure design (PID) district and brings an understanding of how mining operations are transforming to meet rigorous environmental standards and provide sustainability solutions.
“Tom brings a strong commitment to our people, technical excellence and collaboration that will support our clients by considering sophisticated technologies and green practices to protect and preserve our ecosystems,” said Sofia Berger, WSP executive business line leader, Earth and Environment.
Rutkowski succeeds Jim Daly, who, having served in the role for the past five years, planned a transition to a client-facing role to better support WSP’s focus on clients and project delivery. Daly is a geotechnical engineer with 30 years of WSP experience in operational leadership and delivery of mining, civil-geotechnical and environmental projects.
As an industrial water treatment engineer, Rutkowski’s entire career has been spent in industrial water treatment with a focus on mine water treatment. He has been responsible for managing and directing water treatment projects in the U.S., Canada and South America. Over the past eight years, he served as group leader for a combined U.S. and Canada water treatment team and as district leader for mining PID within the U.S. mining business. He is based in Denver.
Rutkowski is a graduate of the University of Colorado-Boulder with a master’s degree in environmental engineering. He has authored numerous conference papers and was the lead author on North American Metals Council selenium treatment technology review update in 2018. With expertise in design, procurement and construction management of surface and underground infrastructure, WSP provides fully integrated multidisciplinary services and customized solutions to U.S. and global mining clients across all stages of the mining life cycle. In support of the energy transition, WSP is helping clients develop battery metal mines such as the Tamarack Project in Minnesota, one of three global high-grade nickel sulphide deposits. Another featured mining project is the Nevada Gold Mines Cortez Hills underground mine expansion.
